Evaluation of Additive Manufactured Plastic Materials for Museum and Conservation Applications

The use of additive manufacturing (AM) in the field of cultural heritage conservation is rapidly expanding. However, the suitability of AM materials for long-term museum and conservation applications remains a critical concern. This study aims to evaluate the stability and safety of AM plastic materials through a series of tests (ageing accelerated test – Oddy tests, mechanical testing, chemical and surface characterization before and after the accelerated test) to determine their potential for use in museum and conservation environments.
Aims and Objectives:
- Age Acceleration: To assess the chemical stability of AM plastic materials using the Oddy test.
- Chemical Analysis: Analysis of the chemical composition of each material before and after the
Oddy test using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). - Mechanical Property Evaluation: Conduct tensile and compression strength tests to evaluate
the material’s durability after the Oddy test. - Surface Analysis: Document texture characteristics and monitor any changes before and after
the Oddy test through digital microscopy for aesthetic and tactile assessment.
